Ron Rubin is a bio-medical engineer specializing in medical instrumentation with over 30 years of experience in the field of medical science and technology.

Medical technology is the "hottest" and most interesting field in the 21^st century. Major breakthroughs in various fields of technology like nanotechnology, smart materials, and computer development will enable personalized medicine (medicine tailored to each individual) replace ment of missing or faulty organs and prevention of major diseases. In these lectures, the listeners will hear current information in clear concise and easy to understand language.

All lectures are accompanied with attractive audio-visual aids, personal stories of the lecturer, based on his experience in the field and stories on the leading investigators which helped bring this field to its current and modern state.

"A man or machine"? – On development of artificial organs.

Replacement of faulty or missing human organs with modern medical technology enables normal function, sometimes even better than normal! On personal stories of innovators who were motivated to develop better technology since they suffered a personal injury. Major breakthroughs in the lab which will lead in the imminent future a revolution in the way medicine is practiced.

"Long distance medicine" – Following patients in their home environment.

Following sick patients in their homes will improve their medical condition and will save the health care system huge sums of money due to repeated hospitalizations. New technology has been developed to transfer and communicate any medical data between patient and physician no matter where they are on the planet. The ability to provide online medical advice and consultancy to any point on the globe brings the most advanced medicine to the most remote places. Humanoid robots will help patients live in their own natural environment providing medical care and company.

Nanotechnology – The advantages of small structures in medical technology.

The ability to hold a single atom and build new molecules will enable delivery of the right minute dose of medicine only to these places in the body where they are needed. Hence these will prevent harm to healthy cells and tissues not involved in the disease. Fascinating stories about early detection of small number of cancer cells, circulating in the blood stream will be a routine practice in the not too distant future. Scientists dream about tiny machines which will create even tinier machines eventually creating new molecules or structures as required. For example, a person will be able to swallow a small robot which will identify genetic defects and repair them.

What is a natural pacemaker and do we do when it stops working properly? How did NASA the American space agency helped bring the artificial pacemaker to its current state? The future of artificial pacemakers and artificial hearts. How do physicians map the electrical and mechanical activity of the heart? The future of stem cells implantation and restoration of a failing heart to normal function.

"I am the robot". –Robots function in the medical field.

Industrial robots are functioning quite successfully in car manufacturing for many years. In the last 15 years, robots are expanding their utility to various medical fields, starting in the operating theatre, and leading to medical education and training and rehabilitation. In the operating theatre the robot overcomes human problems like fatigue, accuracy and tremor quite successfully. Surgical robots can operate on a patient in one country whereas the human surgeon operates the robot from another country. Robots already help hospitals and big pharmacies to deliver huge amount of medicine without human errors.

Based on many years of experience developing medical instrumentation, I will demonstrate to you this "wonderful pump" which never relaxes throughout our life time. Genetic and environmental factors may harm this wonderful operation. Scientists, physicians and engineers joined their talents, stamina and creativity to invent some of the most significant biomedical innovations in human history. These inventions help the failing heart to recover from collapse to full recovery and thus saving life. You will hear about heart transplant, artificial heart, the electrical circuits in our heart and their functions, stents and artificial valves, pacemakers and more. No question will remain unanswered whether during or after the lecture.

In ancient and modern times men have fantasized about the super human unharmed by bullets, diseases or old age. Modern day biomedical technology has made some of these fantasies into a reality. Replacing failing or missing organs and tissues are now performed in large numbers. New materials, nano-technology, high computing capability, wide pass communication and miniaturization have enabled the replacement of almost every organ in our body, or at least part of it. Research and development are ongoing to replace the digestive system, pancreas, heart, skin, kidneys, blood and blood vessels, valves, eyes, ears and even parts of the brain. I will show you some of these amazing achievements as well as the failures which occurred along the long road to the present successful devices and technology. The future is even brighter and I will show some of the projects that are still being developed in the experimental laboratory or beginning of clinical trials.

Yoram Porath Biography

Yoram Porath began his career as a photographer and writer for National Geographic. His films were presented in dozens international film festivals. Today he produces films at his production company 'Outline Films' and lecturer in several cultural institutions.

ROMALE

Lecture No 1: 90-120 minutes.

During five years director Yoram Porath documented a remote Gypsy community in east Slovakia. The film is based on a unique experience of an outsider who succeeded to be accepted to a gypsy family. During that time he was exposed to the community's darkest secrets and learned about their isolation.

The documentary's synopsis

An extremely toxic mine site is home to a community of Roma (Gypsies). Three youngsters strive to fulfill their dreams and leave the community's cycle of poverty, imprisonment and death.

Marian and Roman are struggling to support their large families in an environment of contamination crime and unemployment. Marian, who has been in and out of jail, desires to change his ways and create with Roman a Gypsy musical band. Margareta is a 14 year-old girl whose modest dream to graduate school and become a waitress is challenged by her early pregnancy.

Romale is a cutting edge document of individual dreams verses realities, and a poetic shout for equality for the Romani People.

Lecture No 2:

Keepers of Eden is an account of the struggles of the Huaorani tribe, a group that has inhabited the Amazon rainforest for thousands of years. The Huaoranis are facing a major attack on their culture and environment, with the major oil companies entering their land and polluting the soil water and air of their precious environment.

Over three years filmmaker Yoram Porath documented the Huarani people and their struggle against the Oil companies. During the production he worked “under cover” and was several times in high risk.

During the lecture Yoram will tell his story about living among the Huaoranies, a tribe of hunters gathers. The tribes members still hunt with blow-guns and spears and manifest one of the last living cultures in the Amazon Basin.

KEEPERS OF EDEN is a unique story of a small group of indigenous activists fighting against the strongest economic power in the world, the power of oil.

Lecture No 3:

Spain – ethnic groups beliefs and folklore

Spain is a land of contrasts. From the high caps of the Pyrenees mountains in the north to the dry deserts in the South, from the lazy attitude “A la manana” in Andalucia to the hard working Leon people and the superstitious farmers in Las Hurdes. Though Spain is one of the early states in europe, it is divided by numerous ethnic groups, beliefs, tongs, and topographical zones. Spain is a colorful and puzzling cultural mosaic.

National geographic photographer Yoram Porath is addicted to Spain. He will tell about his unique and exciting journeys in Spain's various provinces. The lecture will focused on the “Bull-Run” in Pamplona, on the pilgrim journey of 800 Km to the sacred town Santiago Compustela, on the largest fire festival “Las Fayas” in Valencia, on the enchanted forest of Oma in the Basque region, on flamenco and Gypsys in Andalucia and many more.
